Service Description

Join us for our Physiotherapist-led Dog Fitness Class for beginners! The experienced Physiotherapist will guide you through current science-based exercise techniques to get your dog on the road to feeling and looking great! Based on Dr Helen Nicholson's pioneering Canine Conditioning Course at Whole Family Health in St Mary's, we are bringing a special twist for the Dogs of The Shire. This class is perfect for pet dogs who want to be more active, lose weight or prevent injury. Whether your dog has a daily walk, or even if your dog doesn't normally do any exercise, we'll go at their pace to make sure everyone gets benefit from the class. We'll cover a range of flexibility, strength, body awareness (proprioception) & core stability activities at you and your dogs pace. It's fun, light-hearted, and past attendees have made lasting friendships too! Dogs need to be relatively healthy with no recent injuries, pain or limping / lameness. If you're not sure if this class is right for them, please give us a call. You & your dog will get the most out of it if you attend at least 4 classes. There are lots of activities to try, we like to make sure you're confident with the techniques & exercises, and the Physiotherapist will progress them each week as your dog improves. However there's no obligation to book more than 1 class at a time. We run 1 class per week for 4 weeks, then take 1 weeks break. Many people keep attending beyond 4 weeks as they enjoy it so much, and they can see the incredible benefits for their dog. Class has a maximum of 6 dogs per week to ensure each client receives individual time with the Physio. This also gives dogs plenty of space from the others, in case they're not a "people person". Dogs stay on leash at all times and do not freely socialise as part of the class, so that people with older, shy or anxious pets can participate, feeling confident that their dog won't be in a situation where dogs freely approach. However, if your dog is reactive, anxious or very shy around other dogs, they may not enjoy this class. Feel free to call us to discuss. You'll receive detailed info on booking but what you need to bring is your dog, a collar & lead and plenty of their favourite treats. There is parking right outside the building.

The session fee is still chargeable if your dog refuses to go in the water, or needs to be removed from the water before the end of the session for any reason. It is likely that Physiotherapy can continue on the beach, even if your dog can't or won't go in the water. It is sometimes necessary to bring the dog out of the water for a rest or time to warm up part-way through.
